Nigeria, a very large country richly endowed with mineral and natural resources, populated with over 160 Million people having different ethnic and religious beliefs. This is why we are taking a look at complete list of oil producing states in Nigeria and when oil was discovered in Nigeria. Since the oil boom of 1971, when crude oil was discovered, Nigeria’s main source of revenue shifted from exportation of agricultural products to the exportation of crude oil. Oil is found in large quantities in coastal and southern parts of the country such as include Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross Rivers, Delta, Akwa-Ibom, and so on.

LIST OF OIL PRODUCING STATES IN NIGERIA 2017

  • 1. Akwa-Ibom State

Akwa- Ibom is currently the largest oil producing state in Nigeria. It’s capital city, Uyo is one of the most beautiful cities in Nigeria. It is bordered by Rivers State, Cross River State and Abia State. Akwa-Ibom state also shares a boundary with the Atlantic Ocean.

The Oron Museum, Ibeno Sand beach and the Mary Slessor House and the likes are tourist sites as they represent the very rich cultural heritage and history of Akwa Ibom.

Akwa-Ibom state also has other natural resources such as clay, coal, silver nitrate, limestone, glass sand and salt.

Akwa- Ibom is divided into 31 local government areas with three major ethnic groups Oron, Annang and Ibibio.

  • 2. Rivers State

Known as one of the most populous states in Nigeria with a population of over 5 million people according to the 2006 census, Rivers state has its capital as Port-Harcourt and is bordered by Imo, Anambra, Abia, Bayelsa and Delta States and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Kalabari, Okrika, Ogoni, Ikwerre, Ibani and Opobo are some of the main ethnic groups in this state.

  • 3. Delta State

This state comprises of the Urhobos, Isokos and the Itsekiris as the major ethnic groups in the state. It is composed of 25 local government areas. Warri, the heart of Delta State is home to one of the petroleum refineries in Nigeria. The state shares boundaries with Edo, Ondo, Imo and Anambra states.

  • 4. Bayelsa State

It is also one of the least populated states in Nigeria with only about 1.9 million residents. Bayelsa State was carved out of Rivers and Delta in 1996. Bayelsa State is made up of four major ethnic groups namely- Ogbia, Nembe, Izon and Epie- Atissa with its capital in Yenagoa. It is bordered by Rivers and Delta states.

  • 5. Cross River State

Named after the popular river, Cross, which originates in Cameroon this state is one of the most beautiful in Nigeria with a lot of tourist sites.

 The state is also known for the Calabar Carnival, one of the largest carnivals in Africa.

The capital of Cross River is Calabar and Cross River shares a boundary with Ebonyi state, Abia state, Akwa Ibom state and Cameroon.

  • 6. Edo State

Benin City is currently the capital of Edo and the state has a population of over 3.3 million spread across the state’s Local Government Areas.

Edo state also has natural resources like limestone, clay, gold, iron ore, fine sand and granite.

  • 7. Imo State

This is a state with a population of about 4 million with 27 Local government areas. This state is also endowed with lead, zinc, fine sand, clay and limestone. Its capital is Owerri and it shares boundaries with Abia, Delta, Rivers and Anambra states.

  • 8. Abia State

This state is bounded by Anambra, Enugu, Imo and Cross river States with Umuahia as its capital. The state comprises of 17 LGA with a population of about 3 million. Abia state has natural resources like lead, zinc, fine sand and limestone.

  • 9. Lagos State

Lagos State a new entrant in the list of oil producing states in Nigeria, the largest state in Nigeria in terms of population. It is a hub of commercial activities and is home to over 17 million people. It is bordered by Ogun state, republic of Benin. It is located in the south Western part of Nigeria with 20 Local Government Areas.

  • 10. Ondo State

This state comprises of 18 Local Government Areas with the Akoko, Akure, Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ondo, and Owo people as the major ethnic groups. It has a population of over 3 million people and shares boundaries with Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Kogi, Edo and Delta states. It also shares boundaries with the bight of Benin and the Atlantic ocean.
